Selecting the Right Threaded Rod Finish for New Zealand's Climate
Choosing the correct material and coating is critical to the long-term integrity of your project. Whether your assembly faces the heavy salt spray of the Coromandel and the West Coast, the unique geothermal demands of Rotorua, or the extreme alpine conditions of the Southern Alps, your choice of finish determines the durability of the build.
At Mainland Fasteners, we don't just supply hardware; we provide the technical expertise to ensure your project stands up to New Zealand’s harshest conditions, from Cape Reinga to the Bluff.
Use the guide below to match our stock of Threaded Rod to your specific environment:
| Finish / Material | Suitability & Environment | Regional Application |
|---|---|---|
| Zinc Plated | Best for internal use in dry, climate-controlled environments. Offers moderate aesthetic appeal but minimal rust protection. | Internal warehouse fit-outs, electrical containment, and indoor machinery. |
| Hot Dipped Galvanised | The standard for outdoor South Island construction. A thick zinc coating provides superior protection against moisture and oxidation. | Canterbury irrigation systems, fencing, structural hold-down bolts, and outdoor HVAC support. |
| T316 Stainless Steel | Marine-grade protection. Essential for any application within 5km of the coast or in highly corrosive chemical environments. | Wharf and jetty maintenance, West Coast infrastructure, and food-grade processing plants. |
| T304 Stainless Steel | Excellent corrosion resistance for general outdoor use where aesthetics and longevity are required without direct salt exposure. | Architectural bracing, external signage, and high-end residential construction. |
| Nylon & Brass | Specialty materials for non-conductive, non-magnetic, or decorative requirements. | Electrical switchboards, chemical tanks, and precision mechanical adjusters. |
Custom Threaded Rod Cutting & Technical Services
We understand that standard lengths don't always fit the job. Mainland Fasteners offers an in-house cutting service to provide you with precision-cut rods to your exact specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you provide test certificates for high-tensile threaded rod?
Yes. We can provide full material and test certificates for our 8.8 and 10.9 high-tensile rods, as well as our B7 studs. Please request these at the time of order to ensure they are included with your documentation.
What is the difference between Zinc Plated and Hot Dipped Galvanised?
Zinc Plated (bright silver) is suitable for indoor or dry environments. Hot Dipped Galvanised (dull grey) provides a much thicker coating of zinc, making it the standard choice for outdoor construction in the South Island’s varied climate.
Can you cut threaded rod to custom lengths?
Absolutely. We offer an in-house cutting service in our Christchurch warehouse. This saves you significant time and equipment wear on-site.
Do you deliver threaded rod outside of Christchurch?
Yes. From our Christchurch warehouse we provide reliable, fast shipping to projects from one end of New Zealand to the other. We maintain a daily delivery service throughout the South Island — including Ashburton, Timaru, Dunedin, Invercargill, Nelson, and the West Coast — while also providing rapid supply to North Island businesses and industrial sites in Auckland, Wellington, Tauranga, and beyond.
Do you stock metric fine thread?
Yes, we carry a range of metric fine pitch threaded rod, which is often required for specific mechanical engineering and automotive applications.
Typical Applications & Industry Uses
